
HISTORY
The instructor started the training in Karate-do Gojukai in 1978 at Indonesia Honbu Dojo amongst hundreds of student under Shihan Maskun Prasetya. Trained by the fourth generation master makes Sensei Andrew as the fifth generation Karate-ka of the founder of Okinawan Karate-do, Hanshi Kanryo Higaonna.
At the dojo, his training was deeply rooted in rigorous traditional methods and approaches. causing over than a hundred students in his generation plummeted left him and a couple of other students stayed and continued the practice.
After ten years of four days a week training, he made to the 2nd degree (NIDAN) black belt. Currently, he holds 4th degree (YONDAN) black belt from two world karate affiliations.
ACHIEVEMENTS
He masters the distinguished techniques in Kata and Bunkai (choreographed sequential moves and its application) and succeeded to be a national gold medalist in that category during the late 80s and the early 90s. With that skill level in Kata, he maintained the first position in the category for several years. As a National Champion during those years, yet he could not compete in the international arena due to the racial sentiment. However, throughout all hardship and restriction, he is recognized as one sought after national-class instructor.
SUPPLEMENTARIES
Apart from the training in Karate, he also succeeded in Wushu - Tai Chi category and positioned as a Runner Up in the National Tournament and was included in the team for the World Championship in Baltimore, U.S.A. in 1995. That was made possible because the government had loosened the discrimination policy against the minority Chinese and Wushu was a new sport category in Indonesia, yet the benefits were unevenly distributed between minority athletes and the favorable athletes. To have a deeper understanding of style variety, beside the regular training, he additionally practiced Shorinji Kempo, Chinese Kung Fu, Kendo, Boxing, and Judo.
